Soundfly’s Orchestration for Strings course is all about helping you compose and arrange for violin, viola, cello, and bass. In it, we look at the individual instruments of the bowed string family and explore a specific textural framework for creating better arrangements. By the end, you’ll understand how to create monophonic, polyphonic, chordal, and homophonic textures, and have a portfolio of original works ready to unveil at your next performance.

We want to do for the web browser what Samuel Halligan’s pop-up piano does for Ableton Live Suite: Turn it into a visual and aural Rosetta stone that translates in real time between different visual and aural representations of music.
Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake played the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII. Jackson came out with a politically charged, very serious song, and everything was going as expected. Then Timberlake came out and brought sexy back, as he does. At the very end of their set, Timberlake reached over to grab at Jackson’s clothes in the choreography, and then it happened. The infamous “wardrobe malfunction” — a.k.a., “the nip slip” — a dancing artist’s worst onstage nightmare. This video is NSFW, though I’m sure your boss has seen it already. What is so impressive is how quickly the whole thing got covered up as they finished their performance in perfectly timed darkness.

If you have been writing songs for some time and find yourself feeling creatively stifled, consider listening to your older songs for inspiration. Map out those songs and identify elements or themes that you can expand upon, improve, or alter. If you are new to songwriting or don’t have music that you previously released, take a trip down memory lane and listen to music that you enjoyed two, five, or even ten years ago. Identify the elements of those songs that you enjoyed and try to incorporate those ideas into your own writing.
The microphone that recorded my clapping hands is mimicking the action of our ears, registering the peaks and troughs through a physical diaphragm and converting these movements into an electrical signal. (*By the way, we have a whole article about how microphones work!)
For example, a kick-driven house track needs to be shaped much differently than a lo-fi song with drum parts you want tucked somewhere in the background. Experiment with different EQs and compressors and resist the urge to lean too heavily on preset options. Purposefully muddling certain instruments in your kit while keeping others sharp and focused can also create an interesting contrast to build on.
There are some slightly more expensive pedals built by Devi Ever FX like the Soda Meiser, the self-explanatory Shoegazer (used by Ringo Deathstarr) or the Rocket fuzz. They’ve got nearly endless sustain, can sound chaotic and super duper fuzzy. But Devi pedals are also pretty unpredictable, which can be fun but sometimes you have to fight with some disturbing frequencies that show up to the party. That’s what you get with analog pedals though — it’s the true experience!
Financially-savvy songwriters have been taking advantage of this loophole by quietly selling a portion of their catalogs. In addition to receiving a big lump sum payment taxed at half the rate, these songwriters are diversifying to hedge against industry turmoil, inflation, and declining royalties. It’s something worth checking out!

Blues guitar is often defined by its light, natural-sounding distorted crunch and a pleasant, round tone. You’ll also need to use the natural expressiveness of the guitar to be able to play both softly and loudly during a blues song, and so I always recommend blues musicians going for a tube amp. Set your gain right where you can play lightly for a nice, clean tone, but where you’ll also get some tasty, soulful distortion when you dig into a note. If you’re getting a tube amp, I’d recommend getting something with a lower wattage so you can crank the gain right on the amp and use its natural distortion settings (no need for fancy pedals in the blues).
